Glycolic Acid for Skin Health this Fall

If my family would let me give a toast this Thanksgiving dinner, I’d raise my glass to glycolic acid for skin health (and then they’d likely never let me give a toast again!).

This week we’re giving thanks to an ingredient that can take our tired, worn out Summer skin and help repair it for a fresh looking face for Fall: glycolic acid.

Fall is the best time to look at repairing skin from the negative effects of summer time fun in the sun: wrinkles and age spots. Adding to the problem, change of seasons and air temperature can bring on acne, blackheads, and oily skin.

Thankfully, glycolic acid addresses all of these concerns.

What is Glycolic Acid anyway?

Glycolic acid is derived from sugar cane, a natural substance. It is a component of the group of active compounds Alpha Hydroxy Acids (aka AHAs).

Because it has the tiniest molecules of the AHAs group, it can penetrate skin deeply, making it the prime tool for treating fine lines, acne, black heads, dullness, oiliness, etc.

You may have heard of chemical peels, which use a heavy dose of glycolic acid. While these peels can be done safely and effectively, you can also achieve the same benefits over time with a lower percentage.

So you can achieve similar results as a chemical peel, but in a safer, convenient way, with long lasting results. Incorporating these pads daily can often give better results because the effects are cumulative. Shocking the skin with high doses could lead to inflammation – something you want to avoid in the skin! Inflammation can lead to redness, irritation, pigmentation and thinned skin.

We included 10% glycolic acid in our Clear Skin Exfoliating Pads (the highest percentage you can purchase over the counter is 10%) because we know it can help address challenging skin conditions. For example cystic acne typically can’t be fixed with conventional products and needs a stronger solution like our pads to treat it.

How does it work?

Glycolic acid effectively “unglues” the outer layer of dead skin cells by dissolving sebum and other substances that bind cells together. Dead skin cells are then sloughed off which helps increase cell turnover. Also, this helps reveal smoother, brighter and younger looking skin underneath.

Benefits of incorporating glycolic acid into your skin care regime*:

  • Long lasting results: effects are cumulative with consistent use.
  • Minimize pores and blackheads: by clearing pores it helps strengthen surrounding cells, allowing them to regain elasticity.
  • Reduce fine lines (signs of aging) by increasing cell turnover rate.
  • Fight acne (including cystic acne) by clearing the deep blockages of dead skin cells and sebum this acid.
  • Reduce scars
  • Deeper penetration of other skin care products: by removing the barrier of dead skin cells these products can penetrate skin easier.
  • Improves skin texture for smoother, softer skin.

Glycolic acid also provides an even exfoliation, promoting even toned skin – important for that overall healthy glow!

So, cheers to glycolic acid for skin health, and happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian customers!
