Consider this fascinating clinical study about the effects of sleep deprivation on facial appearance, supported by the Swedish Sleep Research Society, the Swedish Society for Medical Research, and the Stockholm Stress Centre. The study involved a group of observers rating a series of photos comparing how people look after a normal night of sleep with how they look after being up all night. The second set of photos was taken after participants had only five hours of sleep and were awake for 31 hours straight. The researchers found that even one night of sleep deprivation causes more wrinkles and fine lines, heavier eyelids, and darker circles around the eyes.
